~Gujarat University has introduced a fully digital Ph.D. thesis evaluation system to reduce delays, speed up doctoral degree awards, and promote transparent, technology-driven academic administration.

Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Aug 01 (VNI): In a major student-centric initiative aimed at enhancing efficiency and reducing delays in the doctoral evaluation process, Gujarat University has introduced a fully digital mechanism for the evaluation of Ph.D. theses. The new system is expected to significantly reduce the time taken for thesis evaluation, enabling research scholars to receive their doctoral degrees much faster.
According to the University, Gujarat University has awarded around 5,700 Ph.D. degrees since its inception, while nearly 25 research scholars submit their theses every month for evaluation. Under the existing system, the University relied on postal communication with external referees for obtaining consent, dispatching thesis copies, and receiving evaluation reports, often resulting in delays of six months to one year due to logistical issues.
Under the new digital process, Gujarat University will communicate with external referees through its official email system. Consent received via email will be treated as valid, Ph.D. theses will be shared digitally, and evaluation reports submitted electronically will be accepted as official records. The move is expected to accelerate the evaluation process, ensuring quicker declaration of results and faster award of doctoral degrees.
The University said the initiative will also reduce expenditure on printing, packaging, and postal dispatch while supporting the Government of India’s Digital India vision by promoting transparent, efficient, and environmentally sustainable academic administration.
Prof. Dr. Jagdish Joshi, In-charge Vice-Chancellor of Gujarat University, said research is the backbone of academic excellence and scholars should not be burdened by procedural delays. He said the digital Ph.D. thesis evaluation system reflects the University’s commitment to leveraging technology for faster, transparent, efficient, and student-friendly academic processes.
