Mundra, Gujarat, Aug 03 (VNI): Adani Ports’ flagship Mundra Port has achieved a historic milestone by handling 21,085 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) on the ultra-large container vessel MSC AMBRA, setting a new national record for the highest container volume handled on a single vessel at any Indian port.
The achievement further strengthens Mundra Port’s position as India’s leading commercial port and a key gateway for the country’s expanding containerised trade.
MSC AMBRA, one of the world’s largest container ships, measures 400 metres in length and 61.54 metres in width with a displacement of 256,228 metric tonnes. The vessel arrived with a forward draft of 15.10 metres and an aft draft of 15.15 metres, highlighting Mundra Port’s deep-draft marine infrastructure and ability to accommodate ultra-large container vessels safely and efficiently.
Executive Director of Adani Ports Mundra, Rakshitbhai Shah, said the handling of 21,085 TEUs on MSC AMBRA marks a proud moment for both Mundra Port and India’s maritime sector. He noted that surpassing the previous national record by 4,516 TEUs reflects the port’s world-class infrastructure, advanced technology, operational excellence and the dedicated efforts of Team Mundra Port. He added that the port remains committed to building future-ready capabilities as global shipping increasingly shifts towards larger vessels.
The new benchmark surpasses the previous national record of 16,569 TEUs, achieved by MSC LIVORNO in January 2024. The latest operation represents an increase of approximately 26.9 per cent, demonstrating the port’s growing capability to handle larger cargo volumes with efficiency and precision.
The record-setting operation was made possible through meticulous pre-arrival planning, precise berth allocation, strategic crane deployment, real-time yard management and seamless coordination across multiple teams. Mundra Port’s advanced terminal infrastructure, modern cargo-handling equipment, data-driven systems and experienced workforce ensured the complex operation was completed safely, efficiently and with high operational excellence.
