Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Oct 27 (VNI): The 22nd Annual Conference of the Indian Arthroplasty Association, IAACON 2026, concluded successfully in Ahmedabad after three days of scientific exchange, clinical learning and discussions on the latest advancements in joint replacement surgery. The conference brought together 205 national faculty members and nine international experts, along with hundreds of orthopaedic surgeons and postgraduate students from across India, highlighting the growing role of robotics, artificial intelligence and surgical innovation in modern arthroplasty.
The conference was jointly supported by the Indian Arthroplasty Association, Indian Orthopaedic Association, Gujarat Orthopaedic Association, Ahmedabad Orthopaedic Society and Ahmedabad Arthroplasty Association. The gathering reinforced Gujarat’s position as one of India’s leading centres for joint replacement surgery and advanced orthopaedic care.
Experts highlighted that more than three lakh hip and knee replacement surgeries are performed annually in India. With increasing adoption of advanced surgical techniques and technology-driven treatment approaches, arthroplasty is evolving rapidly to improve surgical precision, patient safety, recovery and long-term outcomes.
The conference was preceded by a cadaveric workshop at B. J. Medical College, where approximately 70 faculty members and 180 delegates participated in hands-on training. The workshop covered the direct anterior approach to hip replacement, unicondylar knee replacement and reverse shoulder replacement, providing practical learning opportunities for orthopaedic professionals.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated the conference and highlighted the transformative impact of joint replacement surgery on patients’ lives. He emphasised that restoring mobility enables individuals to regain independence, return to work and participate actively in community life. He also underlined the importance of continued advancements in surgical techniques and professional training to strengthen patient care.
Dr. H. P. Bhalodia, Organising Chairman of IAACON 2026, said the conference provided a valuable platform for surgeons to evaluate emerging technologies and exchange clinical perspectives. He emphasised that collaborative learning and evidence-based discussions are essential as newer technologies become part of orthopaedic practice.
Dr. Dhiraj Marothi Jain, Organising Secretary, noted that meaningful dialogue is central to the success of a scientific conference. He said the active participation of delegates and faculty members helped deepen understanding of complex clinical situations and contributed to professional development.
One of the major highlights of IAACON 2026 was its focus on robotics and artificial intelligence in joint replacement surgery. Delegates participated in discussions and demonstrations involving image-based, imageless and AI-enabled 3D robotic technologies increasingly being integrated into modern arthroplasty. Experts examined how these systems support pre-operative planning, bone preparation, implant positioning and real-time assessment of alignment and joint balance.
Held under the theme “Evolving Arthroplasty: Robotics, Kinematics & Innovation,” the conference explored emerging surgical technologies, clinical experiences and evidence-based approaches to improving outcomes in hip, knee and shoulder replacement procedures.
The academic programme featured 35 scientific sessions and four structured debates, alongside surgical video presentations, complex case-based discussions and dedicated learning opportunities for young orthopaedic surgeons. Interactive sessions enabled detailed discussions on clinical decision-making, surgical planning and the management of challenging cases. Key topics included implant alignment and design, infection prevention, surgical outcomes and enhanced recovery protocols.
With its emphasis on robotics, artificial intelligence, advanced imaging and evidence-based clinical practice, IAACON 2026 highlighted the changing landscape of joint replacement surgery. The conference concluded with renewed professional collaborations and valuable scientific insights, reaffirming the orthopaedic community’s commitment to improving mobility, enhancing quality of life and delivering better outcomes for patients.
