~IIT Gandhinagar and IAIRO sign an MoU to collaborate on AI research, innovation, education, talent development, joint projects, and AI infrastructure, strengthening India’s AI ecosystem.
Gandhinagar, Gujarat, July 29 (VNI): The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian AI Research Organisation (IAIRO) to strengthen collaboration in artificial intelligence research, education, innovation, and talent development.
The partnership aims to create a robust AI ecosystem by promoting advanced research and collaborative academic initiatives. Under the agreement, both institutions will jointly undertake AI research projects, seek research grants, and explore opportunities to establish AI infrastructure through external funding. They will also organise short-term courses, certificate programmes, conferences, seminars, workshops, and other AI-focused academic events.
The collaboration will facilitate academic exchange by enabling IITGN faculty and researchers to deliver lectures and training programmes for IAIRO scientists and engineers, while IAIRO experts will contribute to teaching, mentoring, and research activities at IITGN. The MoU also includes provisions for joint supervision of doctoral students, research internships, adjunct appointments, and shared access to research infrastructure and computational facilities, subject to institutional policies.
IIT Gandhinagar Director Prof. Rajat Moona said the collaboration marks an important step in strengthening India’s AI research and innovation ecosystem. He noted that IAIRO’s presence in GIFT City, adjacent to IIT Gandhinagar, creates a natural opportunity to leverage complementary strengths. He added that AI is already transforming sectors such as healthcare, life sciences, and drug discovery, and the partnership will help deliver meaningful outcomes for India’s growing AI capabilities.
Dean of Research & Development Prof. Vimal Mishra said the partnership combines complementary expertise, research infrastructure, and talent to advance AI research, foster innovation, nurture skilled professionals, and develop technologies aligned with national priorities. Dr. Amit Sheth, Founding Director and CEO of IAIRO, said strong collaborations between academia and industry are essential to achieving India’s AI ambitions and strengthening the Gujarat AI Valley ecosystem. Prof. Sanjay Chaudhary, Collaborations & Operations Lead at IAIRO, added that the MoU provides a practical framework for sustained cooperation through joint research, faculty exchanges, AI programmes, student engagement, and shared research infrastructure.
