~Trump announces Essar-backed Mesabi Metallics’ $18 billion investment to build an integrated American steel complex linking Minnesota iron ore mining with steelmaking in Iowa.

WASHINGTON, D.C. / INDIA, Sep 29 (VNI): U.S. President Donald J. Trump on Monday announced at the White House an $18 billion investment by Essar-backed Mesabi Metallics to build a fully integrated American steel company, linking its iron ore mine on Minnesota’s Mesabi Iron Range with a new steel complex in Iowa. The investment comprises a proposed $15 billion integrated steel complex in Iowa and the existing $3 billion investment in the iron ore mine and pelletizing facility in Minnesota.
The announcement was made in the presence of Ravi Ruia, Vice Chairman and Founder of Essar Group, and Rewant Ruia, Chairman of Mesabi Metallics. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright and John Jovanovic, Chairman of the U.S. Export-Import Bank, were also present, along with Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, Senator Joni Ernst and Representatives Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Ashley Hinson.
The project is described as the largest single-location investment in an integrated steel complex in American history. It is expected to create jobs in Minnesota and Iowa, support economic growth across the Midwest and establish a fully integrated U.S. steel supply chain, with iron ore mined, steel melted and finished products produced in the United States. Mesabi Metallics recently opened what it describes as the first new iron ore mine in the United States in 50 years.
Ravi Ruia said the investment marks a new chapter in Essar’s global journey and carries forward the vision of his late brother, Shashi Ruia, to build world-class businesses with a global footprint. He said Essar, with more than three decades of experience across the steel value chain, would bring that expertise to the investment and linked the project to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a stronger India-U.S. economic partnership.
Rewant Ruia said the project would connect Minnesota’s iron ore resources with steelmaking in Iowa to produce American steel. He said the investment would create thousands of jobs, strengthen domestic steelmaking capacity and establish Mesabi Metallics as a major participant in the U.S. steel industry.
Mesabi Metallics’ iron ore mine, located in Nashwauk, Minnesota, has attracted nearly $3 billion in investment to date. The mine is expected to produce Patriot Pellet, a direct-reduction-grade iron ore pellet designed for modern electric arc furnace steelmaking. The Minnesota-produced pellets will supply the Iowa steel complex, creating a domestic mine-to-mill supply chain.
More than 1,500 construction workers are currently working at the Minnesota site, along with more than 200 full-time employees. Employment at the mine is expected to reach 350 full-time jobs once it becomes fully operational.
The proposed Iowa complex represents a further $15 billion investment and is expected to create more than 8,000 construction jobs, while local vendors and suppliers are expected to support additional employment. Once operational, the complex is expected to employ at least 1,750 full-time workers. The company estimates that its investment in American-made steel will generate $95 billion in total economic output during construction and the first 10 years of full operations.
The Iowa complex will use hot direct-reduced iron (DRI) and electric arc furnace (EAF) technologies. According to the company, these technologies will reduce energy consumption and emissions compared with traditional coal-fired blast furnace production. Hot DRI will be fed directly into EAFs, together with scrap steel, to improve energy efficiency during the steelmaking process.
Mesabi Metallics said the combination of domestic iron ore from Minnesota and modern EAF steelmaking in Iowa will allow it to produce finished steel through a fully domestic manufacturing process. The company said the integrated approach is intended to combine the advantages of domestic iron ore production with efficient electric steelmaking while supporting the production of high-quality, cost-effective and lower-emission American steel.
