Mumbai, Oct 20, Western Railway has embarked on an ambitious plan to redevelop 124 stations, aiming to provide state-of-the-art facilities and enhanced infrastructure for passengers.
According to a press release issued today by Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer, This redevelopment project covers 30 stations in the Mumbai Central division, 18 in Vadodara, 19 in Ratlam, 20 in Ahmedabad, 20 in Bhavnagar, and 17 stations in the Rajkot division. The stations will be upgraded with modern amenities and world-class infrastructure, enhancing the travel experience for passengers and making railway operations more efficient.
Among these key stations, Surat Railway Station stands out as one of the major station being developed. Surat station is being developed as a Multi – Modal Transport Hub (MMTH) which will integrate Railways, GSRTC City Bus Terminal station, Metro, etc to provide seamless connectivity. Surat station has been designed with architectural ambience which will ensure that the entire station premises has an overall look and feel of a business centre of international standards. The unified theme through appropriate facade, finishes, colours, materials, textures will add to its splendour. Surat, one of the fastest-growing cities in India and a major hub for trade and commerce, will see its station transformed into a crucial centre for passenger movement and economic activities.
He said, the total estimated cost of the Surat station redevelopment project is approx. ₹1,477 crore, with a contribution of around ₹481 crore from the Government of Gujarat. The Railways contribution is a significant amount of more than ₹996 crore. The redevelopment work is being carried out by Surat Integrated Transport Corporation (SITCO), a special purpose vehicle (SPV) formed in collaboration between Indian Railways and the Government of Gujarat. The project includes the expansion of the station building, platform upgrades, improvement of passenger amenities, and beautification of the station premises.
The redeveloped Surat station will offer world-class passenger facilities, including a massive concourse spanning 10,900 square meters, lounges, retail shops, and a skywalk. To manage crowding, additional facilities will be developed above the platforms. The station will have 41 lifts and 70 escalators to ensure smooth passenger movement and will be fully accessible to Divyangjan commuters. The station is being developed as a platinum-rated Green building, promoting environmental conservation and ensuring efficient use of energy, water, and other resources.
Once redeveloped, Surat Station will emerge as a modern, passenger-centric facility, addressing the needs of the city’s rapidly growing population. This transformation will position Surat as a key passenger and commercial hub. The project marks a significant step towards creating “Naye Bharat ka Naya Station”.
