The Department of Posts has launched the national-level ‘Dhai Akhar’ Letter Writing Competition 2026, inviting participants of all age groups to revive the art of handwritten letters. North Gujarat Region Postmaster General Krishna Kumar Yadav announced on Tuesday that the competition offers cash prizes ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹50,000, with entries accepted until October 31, 2026.
Participants have been asked to write on the theme “A Letter to Mother Earth: My Promise to Protect Nature.” Letters must be written on an inland letter or envelope issued by the Department of Posts and may be submitted in English, Hindi, or any Indian vernacular language. The competition has two age categories—up to 18 years and above 18 years—and entries should be sent to the Chief Postmaster General, Gujarat Circle, Ahmedabad-380001.
Yadav said the competition aims to reconnect the younger generation with the rich tradition of letter writing while promoting creativity, originality, and interest in philately. Schools and colleges are encouraged to collaborate with the Department of Posts to organize participation drives. Every letter must include the participant’s full name, address, date of birth, mobile number, and school or college details.
The competition will recognize winners at both the state (circle) and national levels. State-level prizes are ₹25,000, ₹10,000, and ₹5,000 for the top three entries, while national winners will receive ₹50,000, ₹25,000, and ₹10,000 respectively. Overall, prizes worth ₹40.20 lakh will be distributed across the country.
Emphasizing the importance of handwritten communication in the digital era, Krishna Kumar Yadav said a letter carries emotions, memories, and human warmth that instant messaging cannot replace. He described the ‘Dhai Akhar’ campaign as a meaningful initiative to strengthen relationships, encourage creative writing, and pass on India’s rich letter-writing tradition to future generations.
