~Reliance Jio leads Gujarat’s wireless market with 46.2% share and 335.5 lakh subscribers, recording 37.9% CAGR since its 2016 launch.
Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Sep 07 (VNI): Reliance Jio has emerged as the largest wireless operator in Gujarat, with a 46.2% market share and 335.5 lakh subscribers as of June 2026, marking a significant transformation of the state’s telecom market over the past decade.
Jio, which had no reported subscribers in August 2016, recorded 14.6 lakh users in September 2016, its first month of operation. Its subscriber base subsequently expanded to 335.5 lakh by June 2026, an absolute increase of 320.9 lakh subscribers and a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 37.9%. According to Jio, its subscriber base multiplied around 22.9 times during this period.
Jio overtook Airtel in July 2017 and became Gujarat’s largest operator in December 2020, retaining the top position since then. Airtel’s subscriber base increased from 86.8 lakh in August 2016 to 158.4 lakh in June 2026, registering a 6.3% CAGR. Vodafone Idea’s combined base declined from 316.8 lakh to 200.1 lakh, while BSNL fell from 39.8 lakh to 33.0 lakh.
The Gujarat telecom market also witnessed significant consolidation during the decade. The “Others” category, comprising operators such as Tata, Reliance Communications, Aircel, Telenor and Videocon, declined from 175 lakh subscribers in August 2016 to zero by around July 2019. Vodafone Idea had peaked at 354.8 lakh subscribers in April 2018 before declining to 200.1 lakh by June 2026.
Overall, Gujarat’s wireless subscriber base increased from 633.7 lakh in September 2016 to 727.0 lakh in June 2026, a growth of 14.7%. As of June 2026, the market ranking was Jio at 335.5 lakh, Vodafone Idea at 200.1 lakh, Airtel at 158.4 lakh and BSNL at 33.0 lakh, with Jio commanding a 46.2% share of the circle.
