~Shalby Hospitals performs Gujarat’s first tele-robotic bariatric surgery, with the surgeon operating remotely from Gurugram while patients underwent surgery in Ahmedabad.
Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Aug 10 (VNI): Shalby Multi-Specialty Hospitals has successfully performed Gujarat’s first tele-robotic bariatric (metabolic) surgery, marking a major milestone in advanced robotic healthcare. The procedure was performed at Shalby Hospital, SG Highway, Ahmedabad, while the operating surgeon remotely controlled the robotic system from the SSI Innovations Centre in Gurugram.
The surgery was led by Dr. Parag Patel, Consultant Laparoscopic, Robotic, Bariatric & Gastrointestinal Surgeon at Shalby Hospitals, in coordination with the Ahmedabad-based bedside team headed by Dr. Sourabh Damani, Consultant Robotic & Laparoscopic Gastrointestinal, Bariatric and Metabolic Surgeon. Dr. Mohsina Saiyad, Hardik Mcwan, Hardik Acharya and the anaesthesia, nursing, operating theatre and technical teams also contributed to the successful procedures.
Two patients from Gujarat underwent tele-robotic bariatric procedures. A 42-year-old woman from Rajkot, weighing 107.5 kg with a BMI of 43.1 kg/m² and suffering from Class III obesity and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, underwent Tele-Robotic Gastric Bypass surgery. A 53-year-old woman from Vadodara, weighing 107.2 kg with a BMI of 48.3 kg/m² and diagnosed with Class III obesity and Grade II fatty liver, underwent a Tele-Robotic SASJ-SOS MGB (Mini Gastric Bypass) procedure.
The procedures were performed using the India-developed SSI Mantra 3 robotic surgical platform, which enables surgeons to remotely perform complex procedures across geographical distances. Robotic-assisted bariatric surgery offers high-definition 3D vision, enhanced precision and greater dexterity, potentially resulting in reduced tissue trauma, less post-operative pain and faster recovery. The procedures are expected to support sustained weight loss and improve obesity-related metabolic conditions and associated complications.
Dr. Parag Patel said obesity is a chronic metabolic disease affecting nearly every organ system and that bariatric surgery is increasingly recognised globally as metabolic surgery because it can significantly improve conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and sleep apnoea.
