~Indonesia and Vantara launch a major wildlife health and conservation partnership covering veterinary care, mobile hospitals, elephant treatment and capacity building.
Jakarta, Indonesia, Aug 24 (VNI): Indonesia has announced a major expansion of its wildlife health and in-situ conservation efforts through a new partnership with Vantara, one of the world’s largest wildlife conservation initiatives founded by Anant Ambani, Executive Director of Reliance Industries Limited, in collaboration with PT Fauna Land Group.
Indonesia’s Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni said the partnership will strengthen the country’s wildlife health and conservation infrastructure. He said all facilities and programmes under the cooperation will remain owned, operated and managed by the Government of Indonesia and relevant authorities, in line with the country’s conservation priorities.
Vantara CEO Vivaan Karani said Vantara is grateful for the opportunity to support Indonesia, which is home to extraordinary biodiversity. He said Vantara will contribute its expertise in wildlife health, veterinary care, animal husbandry and conservation while also learning from Indonesia’s considerable conservation experience.
The programme includes capacity-building training for elephant caregivers, veterinarians and other wildlife-management officials, along with the deployment of 10 Hospitals on Wheels to provide veterinary services for wild animals across Indonesia in their natural habitats. The Way Kambas Elephant Hospital will also be upgraded into an Elephant Treatment and Care Centre equipped with advanced tools, technologies and facilities. The upgraded centre is expected to support 62 Sumatran elephants under human care and nearly 100 wild Sumatran elephants in the surrounding landscape.
Danny Gunalen, CEO of Fauna Land, said the collaboration will bring together the experience and expertise of the Government of Indonesia, Vantara and Fauna Land to strengthen wildlife care, local capacity and conservation infrastructure. The broader cooperation under an existing MoU covers wildlife health and veterinary care, in-situ and ex-situ conservation, animal welfare, conservation breeding, rehabilitation, rewilding and capacity building.
For Vantara, the partnership marks an expansion of its international conservation engagement following the release of its Five-Year Plan. It will extend expertise developed at its Jamnagar facility to support wildlife health, animal care and in-situ conservation initiatives in Indonesia, in alignment with its recent voluntary commitments to the CITES management authority of India.
